MU Annual Meeting & Council

We were blessed with a lovely 5th of November day on which to hold the Chelmsford, Diocese Mother’s Union Annual Meeting and Council. The Annual Meeting started prompt at 10.30am and was thought to be the one of the fastest on record. So, with no further ado the Council Meeting began. First up was the welcome and apologies followed by the Minutes of last year’s meeting which was approved and signed off by Judith. We were alerted to the Unit Reports and it was only Lucy Bubb who gave us the wonderful news that she had finally made contact with Mothers’ Union in South Sudan despite the many problems the people are facing out there, nevertheless Lucy took a series of ‘Wave’ photos which she hopes to be able to send in due course. Lucy also said that she was keeping some informal contact with MU in Myanmar for whom she asked to keep in our prayers.
We were delighted to hear that the English for Women project is going strong and that a number of grants have been secured which means that there are no financial problems for the time being.
It was then time to say farewell to the outgoing trustees and to welcome the incoming trustees. Also, there was a fond farewell to our outgoing MU Diocesan Chaplain Rev’d Edward Carter and a welcome for our new Diocesan Chaplain Rev’d Rod Reid. Judith presented all the outgoing members with a small gift also, Merrill Knight – who has been a great help and support to her over the last few years. Judith then called forward and introduced us to the new trustees for the next triennial.
A few future dates were read out including the date of the next meeting which is to be held on 8th May 2019, time 7 for 7.30pm in the Chapter House.
After a short break the Festival Service with Affirming and Commissioning of Diocesan Officers for the Triennium. 2019-2021 began. The Service was conducted by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Rev’d Stephen Cottrell. The Service started with that stirring hymn ‘Great is Thy faithfulness’ followed by a wonderful Call to Worship based on the Mothers’ Union Prayer. The first reading was from Philippians 2: 1-4 read by Merrill Knight. The Gospel reading from Luke 14: 12-14 was read by Rev’d Rod Reid. The Sermon delivered by Rev’d Edward Carter was based on the MU theme ‘Following in Mary Sumner’s Footsteps’. The Bishop then called forward to Commission the President, the Diocesan Chaplain and the Trustees, after which the Chaplain was handed the Mothers’ Union Chaplain’s Stole and the President and Trustees were handed badges for their new role as MU Diocesan Officers. The Service continued with the Peace and a wonderful Eucharist. Ending with the Mothers’ Union Prayer and that lovely hymn ‘In Christ there is no East or West’ and the Blessing… A wonderful Service.
The Bishop ended by thanking all the MU members who had done so much over the last few years.
